erformance product that contributes to muscle function, hydration and pH balance.

Hydration means more than just water. To hydrate properly, we need magnesium, sodium, potassium, calcium, zinc, chloride and other minerals.

In fact, in some cases, high water consumption associated with an under-consumption of these minerals can lead to dehydration.

For example, consuming too much water without electrolytes dilutes the sodium concentration. This causes the cells to absorb too much water and swell, leading to dehydration because the body's electrolytes are also diluted.

Dehydration impairs performance

It is well known that dehydration impairs athletic performance. Research shows that it is common for athletes to lose 6-10% of their weight in sweat during sporting events. But physical performance can be impaired from a loss of only 2% of body weight in sweat.

This decrease affects a number of areas. A slight degree of dehydration can affect endurance, increase fatigue, impair thermoregulation (preventing the body from cooling down under the effect of heat), reduce motivation and increase perceived exertion. Rehydration can reverse these deficits, and also reduce exercise-induced oxidative stress and dehydration, which may improve recovery.

Dehydration also impairs mental performance.

Mild dehydration leads to impairments in a number of important aspects of cognitive function, such as concentration, alertness and short-term memory in children (10-12 years), young adults (18-25 years) and older adults (50-82 years). As you can see, everyone needs these essential minerals, regardless of age or sport activity.

What else depletes electrolytes?

We have established that sweating and strenuous activity are the cause. So is the general under-consumption of water and/or electrolytes. But there are a few other important scenarios that are worth mentioning.

Ketogenic diets, fasting, alcohol consumption and chronic stress can all quickly deplete our mineral content.

Alcohol simply dehydrates us. A bad hangover is partly due to the amount of dehydration and the depletion of minerals it has caused.

Diets low in carbohydrates and ketos increase our need for these minerals because low insulin content causes us to excrete more. In addition, if we produce ketones (during a prolonged fasting or ketogenic diet), they also cause us to excrete more of these minerals because they create an acidic environment. This requires buffering (of pH) by alkaline minerals such as calcium, magnesium and sodium.

Insufficient consumption of these minerals during a ketogenic diet contributes to "ketogenic flu" (cramps, fatigue, headaches, irritability, etc.). ). This problem can often be solved quickly by the intake of electrolytes.

Fasting can be incredibly therapeutic, but it also leads to excessive mineral/electrolyte loss due to mechanisms similar to those of ketogenic diets.

Chronic stress is another example; high levels of cortisol and adrenaline are present when we are stressed and this also depletes magnesium, calcium, zinc, potassium and other minerals.

So where do we find these minerals?

We can find them in food, but unfortunately, the amounts present in food have decreased considerably since the introduction of modern agricultural practices. Factors such as chemical fertilizers, higher levels of CO2 in the air, larger-scale cultivation and poor soils, among others, are the cause.

For example, a study published in Nutrition and Health found that nutrients in vegetables and fruits have decreased by 15% and 16%, respectively, since the 1940s. These include sodium, magnesium and calcium.

So, how can we get enough of them?

Look no further than ATP Labs XL Electrolytes. Each spoon contains magnesium, sodium, potassium, calcium and zinc in significant doses. To promote hydration and water balance, neuron signalling in your brain, healthy digestion, enzyme reactions, muscle contraction, bone health, pH buffering in the body, recovery from stress or exercise, blood sugar control, quality sleep, mental health and much more.

You will also find 3 g of D-Ribose and 500 mg of beet root extract.

Beet root extract is a natural source of nitrates.
